Hon Secretary - Leon Walker (0439 727 768)
Registered for National service in January 1967. At that time I was a Technician In Training with the Post Master General’s Department and also serving in the Citizens Military Forces 1965 to 1967, Serving with Signal Corps, 130 Sig Squadron (Air Support) at Mosman NSW. Transferred to the Infantry Corps, 12 Platoon D Company 17 RNSWR at Orange NSW
At that stage I was prepared to serve five years with the CMF as an alternative to two years full time National Service, however my work situation with the PMG, moving between Sydney and country locations, made it difficult for me to maintain commitments with the CMF. I eventually sought a discharge from the CMF which took effect as from 1st Jul 1967.
I was now back in the running for full time National Service and subsequently undertook the medical on 29th February 1968. On 5th April 1968 I was advised that “you have been found to meet the standards required and therefore fit for service and that, in the normal course of events, you will be required to commence your National Service with the Army”. My call-up notice arrived on 18th April 1968 advising me to report to the Army Training Depot, Addison Rd Marrickville on 1st May 1968. This call up was again deferred on 23rd April 1968 until my training with the PMG had been completed in December 1969.
